How the atoll St. Martin was named-Tour and Travel MRS

 How St. Martin is named:

St. Martin's Atoll is located in the Bay of Bengal, 36 km south of Teknaf Upazila. St. Martin, the only atoll in Bangladesh, was developed into a union in 1983. At eight kilometers, St. Martin's is about four kilometers long and two kilometers wide. Formerly it was called Coconut Ginger. In the 7th-8th centuries, Arab merchants from the Far Middle East used to take a temporary rest on the island while sailing to Akiab and Rangoon. The Arabic word jazira means island. There are many coconut trees on the island. The locals claim that there are about 30,000 coconut trees. However, in 1991, 1994 and 1998, cyclones and tidal surges damaged the coconut trees.

Although the area is widely known as St. Martin, coconut shells are recorded in government documents, records, maps and documents. There is a lighthouse here that guides ships, boats and sailors on the deep sea. It is said that a priest named St. Martin stayed on the island for a while. The area is thought to have been named after him. Once you had to go from Teknaf to St. Martin by wooden boat or rescue boat. Considering the number of tourists, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) launched a two-storey sea truck named 'Khizir-3' from Teknaf by sea in 2002.

Nowadays, there are many privately owned sea-trucks with which tourists can easily get out of the coral island. Tourists are traveling to Teknaf-St. Martin's Island in six ships named Carey Sindabad, Eagle, LCT Kutubdia, Sea-Truck, Kajal, Sonargaon. St. Martin can be reached from Teknaf by crossing the Bay of Bengal in two and a half hours. Under no circumstances is it safe to visit the island during the monsoon season.

It is best to visit St. Martin's during the tourist season to observe the weather. Surrounded by blue waters and rich in blue skies, St. Martin's Island is now gaining popularity among domestic and foreign tourists as a beautiful tourist destination. In addition to the resthouses built by the Cox's Bazar District Council for the accommodation of tourists, there are many privately owned resorts these days. The fun of staying on St. Martin's Island at night in Josner is different. The rippling waves of the sea can be easily observed from the clear glass of the windows of the cottages built near the sea shore. Sunrise and sunset can be enjoyed from St. Martin's Beach as well as Kuakata Sea-Beach in Patuakhali District.
