History of tea gardens in Sylhet: 

Tea is one of the cash crops of Bangladesh. Tea is also one of the sources of export income. The tea industry in Bangladesh was started in 1854 with the Malnichhara tea garden. At present the total number of tea gardens in Sylhet district is 20 (1 sick).

Upazilawari garden: Sylhet Sadar upazila: 

1. Lakkatura,

2 Malnichhara,

3. Alibahar,

4. Dahlia, 

5. Servant,

6. Burjan,

7. Tarapur (7 in total).

Jaintapur upazila:

1. Saliva, 2. Habibnagar, 3. Afifanagar, 4. Sreepur, 5. Khan, 6. The Meghalaya Tea Estate (6 in total).

Gowainghat upazila:

1. Fatehpur, II. Jaflong (2 in total).

Kanaighat upazila: 1. Greed, II. Dona (2 in total). 

Under Fenchuganj Upazila: 1. Manipur, II. Mominchhara, 3. Daluchhara (3 in total). Total land area of ​​tea gardens: 26020.6 acres. The amount of tea produced annually from the gardens is: 16,242 kg (approximately).   

Regarding lease: Number of previously leased tea gardens: 9 are: 1. Lakkatura, II. Malnichhara, 3. Alibahar, 4. Saliva, 5. Habibnagar, 6. Afifanagar, 6. Manipur, 6. Mominchhara and Burjan. Number of renovated tea gardens: 06 Tibagans are: 1. Lakkatura, II. Malnichhara, 3. Habibnagar, 4. Manipur, Malnichhara, 6. Ali Bahar and 6. Burjan. 

Number of newly leased gardens: 8 The following gardens are: 1. Sreepur, II. Jaflong, 3. Servant, 4. Greed, 5. Fatehpur, 6. Eat and 6. The Meghalaya Tea Estate. Currently the number of unlicensed tea gardens: 3 1. Tarapur (Debottar property and lawsuit), II. Dahlia (28.63 acres sued) and 3. Daluchhara (Tea Board has recommended not to give lease till other cases including 5561/04 writ case are not settled.) Sick and abandoned garden: Dona (1). 415 (19) / Land-5 / The garden was declared abandoned on the basis of Memorial No. 2 of Land Control. 

The lease agreement has been executed: 11 orchards are: 1. Sreepur, II. Jaflong, 3. Habibnagar, 4. Malnichhara, 5. Lakkatura, 6. Servant, 6. Greed, 6. Fatehpur, 9. Burjan, 10. Ali Bahar and 11. Manipur. Awaiting the approval of the Ministry of Lease Proposal: Approval of 01 (Afifanagar) Ministry has been received and the process of execution of lease deed is in progress: 02 Tigabagans are: 1. Saliva and II. Eat. Newly created gardens: 1 (The Meghalaya Tea Estate under Jaintapur Upazila). Total land of tea gardens in Sylhet district is 29,644.6 acres. Average annual production of tea from tea gardens is 16,242 kg (approximately). Tea Gardens Classified by Tea Board: Periodic Certificate Issued: 1 (The Meghalaya Tea Estate). There has been no class division from the Tea Board in recent times: The two gardens are: 1. Tarapur (Debottar property) and 2. Donna (abandoned). 


Class A: (Average yield 1250 kg per hectare or more, lease period - 40 years) Total number of gardens is 08. The gardens are: 1. Malnichhara, II. Burjan, 3. Afifanagar, 4. Saliva, 5. Habibnagar, 6. Khan, 6. Manipur. Class B: (Average yield 950 kg or more per hectare, lease period - 30 years) Total number of gardens 02. The gardens are: 1. Jaflong, II. Mominchhara. Class C: (Average yield less than 949 kg per hectare, lease period - 20 years) Total 06 gardens. The gardens are: 1. Lakkatura, II. Alibahar, 3. Servant, 4. Sreepur, 5. Fatehpur, 6. Greed, 6. Daluchhara 6. Dahlia.

Success of the tea garden: The lease of the tea garden has been closed since 2006. The Ministry of Land, Divisional Administration, District Administration, Tea Board and Upazila Administration have made concerted efforts to bring the gardens under lease. The district administration, Sylhet has been working diligently on the lease of the tea garden for the last two years. As a result, the government has opened the door to an unprecedented source of revenue in the revenue sector. It may be mentioned that out of 19 tea gardens in Sylhet district, 18 tea gardens have been brought under lease / lease renewal. Besides, 06 tea gardens without lease have been brought under new lease and activities are continuing to bring the remaining 03 tea gardens under lease.
