History of Meghna River: 

Meghna River or Meghna Upper River is a river in Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Brahmanbaria, Narayanganj, Comilla, Munshiganj, Chandpur, Barisal, Bhola and Laxmipur districts of southeastern Bangladesh. The length of the river is 156 km, the average width is 3400 m and the nature of the river is spiral. Identification number of Meghna Upper river given by Bangladesh Water Development Board "Paubo" is River No. 16 in the south-east. Meghna is the deepest and widest river in Bangladesh and one of the largest and main rivers. The Meghna carries much more rainwater than the major rivers of the world. This river carries rain water from Surma, Kushiyara, Khasia-Jayantia hills, Shillong valley and Cherrapunji. 


Cherrapunji in the Indian state of Meghalaya has the highest rainfall in the world. Large beels or haors have been created in Sylhet for the huge amount of rain water. And because of this Meghna is very deep and fast flowing. Meghna is famous for slopes or floods. When the rainwater cannot reach the estuary very fast, it floods both the banks. A lot of hilsa is found at the confluence of Padma and Meghna near Chandpur. This hilsa is extremely delicious. Hilsa of Chandpur is world famous for this. Location of the long Meghna-Gomti bridge over the Meghna river at Daudkandi in Comilla. The Railway Bridge at Bhairab is also an important bridge over the river.
