Khulna is known as the third-largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Khulna division has a total of 10 districts. Khulna Division was formed in 1960, Khulna City Corporation was established in 1990, Khulna District and Khulna Division is headquartered in Khulna city. Khulna city is located in southwestern Bangladesh on the banks of the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers. Khulna is one of the oldest river ports in Bangladesh. Khulna is called an industrial city as it is one of the industrial and commercial areas of Bangladesh. Mongla is the second largest seaport in Bangladesh at a distance of 48 km from Khulna city. Jessore district of Khulna division has the only airport in this division. Khulna as an industrial city played a special role in the reconstruction of the economy of war-torn Bangladesh after independence.


At present Khulna Division of Education is making a special contribution. The department has a total of five government universities, two private universities, three government medical colleges, four private medical colleges, 25 government, and private technical educational institutions, and more than 30 government and private colleges, more than 50 government and private schools, and more than ten established madrasas. The number of newspapers in the Khulna division is about 20. The world-famous coastal Sundarbans is located in the southern part of the Khulna district, for which Khulna is called the gateway to the Sundarbans. In the Bagerhat district of the Khulna division, there is a sixty domed mosque of World Heritage Khanjahan Ali. The contribution of the Khulna Division to the current economy of Bangladesh is immense.
